Thank you for your support on One Heart One Home Giving Day

What a momentous day it was – our One Heart, One Home Giving Day raised an incredible $1.1 million for Project 101, a major redevelopment of the buildings between Robe and Grey streets. We are simply blown away by the generosity of the community.

On the day, over 1,300 people responded to our calls for support. Some of our clients even walked in throughout the day to make their own contribution.

The funds raised will close the funding gap for our One Heart, One Home building, which, once complete, will provide more homes and enhanced support for people experiencing disadvantage and chronic homelessness.

A day full of excitement and celebration

More than 80 staff, Board members and volunteers took part on the day, reaching out to our community of supporters.

Together we huddled in the Mission’s meeting room; the buzz of phones and chatter thick in the air.

Just outside, Graham, Sacred Heart Community’s resident representative, was busy on the barbecue, cooking up a feast to keep us all going.

The atmosphere was one of excitement and celebration and every milestone throughout the day was met with a great cheer.

Our target was an ambitious one, but everyone was in it together, fueled by the knowledge that our incredible community would get behind us in support of this great cause.

At 8pm, we were closing in on the $1 million target. Staff, Board members and volunteers stood together, anxiously waiting.

Minute after minute the total kept climbing. Then, at 8.31pm, we received an amazing $5,000 (x 4 = $20,000) donation, pushing us over $1 million and launching everyone into celebration.

The Giving Day marks the completion of our One Heart, One Home Campaign. One of the greatest achievements in the Mission’s history and a great example of our innovative approach to ending people’s experience of homelessness.

A long journey

The One Heart, One Home fundraising campaign started back in August 2015 with an original target of $8 million towards the overall $27 million building budget.

Spearheaded by our tireless Campaign Patron Paula Fox AO and Campaign Chair Gerry Ryan OAM, and supported by our incredible campaign leaders, we hit $4.5 million from 60 gifts in just a few months.

Subsequent fundraising events, as well as the Victorian Government’s $3 million contribution for the Rooming House and Hands on Health Clinic redevelopment, brought us closer to the $8 million target.

Part of the $27 million building budget included the sale of our Avonsleigh Residence on Robe Street. Unfortunately this sold for less than planned due to changes in the property market, leaving us with a new funding challenge of $1 million.

The Giving Day helped us close this gap quickly. It took six months of planning and generous matched support from The Fox Family Foundation, The Peter and Lyndy White Foundation, The Macfarlane Fund, Jim and Iva Holt Bequest as well as gifts in lieu of Paula Fox’ birthday.

A legendary result

We would like to extend a special thanks to Minister Martin Foley MP, comedian Brian Nankervis, musician Tim Rogers and radio broadcaster Libbi Gorr who helped out on the day.

The end result was a legendary $1.1 million. Graham was with us all the way, as were so many of the other residents of Sacred Heart Community, who are now looking forward to moving into their new home over Christmas. What a gift!
