Where can I volunteer?

We offer a range of volunteering opportunities across Sacred Heart Mission and welcome your skills and talents. Share your knowledge and have fun whilst helping others.

Sacred Heart Mission provides services to people who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. In order to provide these services, we rely on the generous support of thousands of dedicated volunteers. 960 individuals and 170 groups contributed more than 69,000 hours to the Mission in 2019-20.

Volunteering in our Melbourne community gives you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. As an individual volunteer, there are various areas across the Mission where you can volunteer including our op shops, Dining Hall, the Women’s House, Hands on Health Clinic, reception and Sacred Heart Community.

Please note: We appreciate your interest in volunteering with us. Unfortunately, we have a limited number of volunteer opportunities due to Melbourne's current lockdown. Please check our website again after the restrictions are lifted or follow us on Facebook and Instagram for any updates.

If you already volunteer with us and you are rostered for shifts at our Dining Hall, you will receive a certified permit letter from us. In accordance with Victoria's Coronavirus restrictions, you are required to carry the permit with you when volunteering with us and when travelling for volunteering, starting from Tuesday, 17 August 11.59pm.

Op shops

Our op shops provide great opportunities for volunteers to use or develop their customer service and retail skills, while helping to raise funds for our services. Open seven days a week, our op shops need an on-going commitment from volunteers to assist with selling as well as stock replenishment.

Skilled volunteering

Drawing on professional skills in the community through skilled volunteering assists us to maintain and grow our high standard of service to our clients.

We are fortunate to have a number of skilled volunteers who assist with project-specific tasks, and programs such as Kick Start (Health and Wellbeing program) and our Hands on Health Clinic.

Many of our skilled volunteers come from our corporate volunteering partners, who offer their time and expertise in strategy, program analysis and training. Their support adds depth and cutting-edge knowledge to our programs, assisting us to achieve many of our key strategic objectives.

Meals Program - Sacred Heart Central and Women’s House

Our Meals Program, located in our main Dining Hall, is open 365 days a year and provides much needed nutrition and support to members of our community. As a volunteer, you can work in our fully equipped commercial kitchen to help our chefs prepare and serve hundreds of meals each day.

Please note, following universal infection control and food handling guidelines people completing shifts in the Dining Hall may be required to wear a hairnet or cap, disposable gloves, and a face mask.

We also have volunteering opportunities at the Women’s House, helping to prepare and serve meals to women experiencing hardship.

We welcome younger volunteers in our Meals program, but for safety reasons cannot accept volunteers under 15 years of age. Please see our schools volunteering page if under 18 years of age.

Please note: Our Dining Hall remains closed for sit-down dining until further notice to keep our community covid-safe. In the meantime, we will continue to offer daily takeaway meals.

Sacred Heart Community and Rooming House Plus Program

Our Sacred Heart Community and Rooming House Plus Program offer residents community activities to participate in, which volunteers can help organise. Volunteers can assist with art, sporting and leisure activities, attend the weekly residents barbecue or simply provide companionship and conversation to our residents.

Community visitor volunteers get to know residents through fortnightly visits that may include going for a walk, having a coffee, sharing music, reading a book, or just simply having a chat. A friendly face plays a vital role in enriching the lives of the residents who might otherwise feel isolated from the community.

The Wellbeing and Activities program

Volunteering in our Wellbeing and Activities program is perfect for those passionate about sports, yoga, gym sessions, the arts and general wellbeing. Volunteers can utilise their skills and provide a pathway for disadvantaged and marginalised community members to improve their health and wellbeing, increase social participation and build self-confidence.

The Wellness Place

Sacred Heart Mission welcomes the assistance of professional practitioners who volunteer their time to provide a range of health and complementary services through our Wellness Place, including massage, physiotherapy, dental checks, counselling and more.

Reception, administration, events and fundraising

Throughout the year we require the support of volunteers in areas such as Fundraising, Business Services, Business Development, Project Management and IT, to name a few. We also welcome the ongoing support of administrators and receptionists to assist Sacred Heart Central, our Wellness Place and Sacred Heart Community.

Sacred Heart Mission is a rewarding place to volunteer
