Community Visitor Volunteer

Befriend an older person living in our aged care home and make a difference to their life.

By volunteering in an aged care residential facility you can improve the quality of life for older people who have limited contact with others and as a result are at risk of isolation and loneliness– whether for social or cultural reasons, or due to disability. By befriending an older person living in an aged care home, you have a chance to make a difference to their life – and to your own.

Sacred Heart Mission is a local Melbourne charity focused on elevating disadvantage, social exclusion, and homelessness. Volunteering in our own or partner aged care residential facilities is a wonderful and engaging experience that directly supports these goals and values.

Many residents have histories of experiencing homelessness or disadvantage, many with a range of complex needs, resulting from negative life experiences including the effects of poverty, exposure to trauma and social isolation.

St Kilda, Prahran, Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and Windsor.

Regularly visit a resident (that you are matched with) in an Aged Care Facility in one of the above listed suburbs.

Engage the resident in hobbies and activities, which can range from reading the newspaper together to making music or playing cards.

Please note, due to the isolation and age of some of the residents their mental capacity can be quite varied. However, we try to match people with common or similar interests.

As a volunteer, you will receive support from the Volunteer Office as well as the facilities Lifestyle Coordinator.

Weekly/fortnightly visits, during Monday – Friday.

Note: We do require the volunteer to commit for at least six months because it takes time to build a relationship between the resident and volunteer.

To apply:

As part of the application process we will ask you to agree to a confidentiality agreement, adhere to our Code of Conduct, complete an NDIS check (if applicable to the resident you are matched with) and be willing to undergo a police check.
