Sacred Heart Mission opens COVID-19 recovery and respite centre for people sleeping rough

16 April 2020
Room at the SHM Recovery and Respite Centre

Sacred Heart Mission is helping to provide a pop-up accommodation for people to self-isolate, quarantine and recover from the coronavirus – together with Anglicare Victoria, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Launch Housing, VincentCare Victoria and the Victorian Government.

Thanks to a $8.8 million funding from the Minister for Housing Richard Wynne over six months, Sacred Heart Mission along with other sector partners will be repurposing disused buildings to provide temporary accommodations and 24-hour support to more than 100 people.

On site staff will be working with people 24/7 to help them recover from the virus to connect to the services they need to exit homelessness.

We congratulate the government on their decision to provide additional support for our most vulnerable who will be hit the hardest by COVID-19.

As challenging as this situation is, this crisis shows what we knew all along: homelessness is solvable and we can act.

However, like many other charities, we are still fighting for our lives: thousands will lose their income during Covid-19 and people’s housing security is threatened; but we don’t have the capacity to respond to a new wave of homelessness, without the continuous support from the government and our generous community.

Please make a donation today so we can continue to provide food, shelter and opportunities for people to change their lives.
