There’s nothing more frustrating than taking the time to organise donations, only to drive from op shop to op shop trying to drop them off. That’s why we’ve made donating easy.
Here are our top tips to help you donate with ease this summer!
We recommend arming yourself with sturdy boxes and bags. Then create three piles: keep, donate, and discard. Tackle one room at a time. Questions like ‘Have I worn or used this in the last year?’ or ‘Do I really need seven cheese platters?’ can help you make some tough decisions.
If it’s dirty, heavily worn, broken or damaged, it’s not suitable for donation. Every single item that comes into our stores is sorted by hand, and up to 60% of donations can’t be resold and unfortunately end up in landfill. Our op shops are community hubs — not your local tip. Not sure how to dispose of items? Visit City of Melbourne’s ‘A-Z Guide to Recycling‘, there you can find a detailed guide on recycling options.
We’re often asked what we do and don’t accept. Our donation guidelines are available online, and if you have something unique, feel free to email or call your local store — we’re always happy to help.
Before dropping off, check online or call ahead to make sure your local Sacred Heart Mission op shop is accepting donations. Dropping off earlier in the day also helps ensure the store hasn’t reached capacity.
If you’ve done a big clear-out and have more than your car can carry, our free collection service can help. We collect large-scale donations and furniture across inner Melbourne. Simply fill out an online collection form or call 8658 1698.
We really appreciate the time and effort you put into donating to our op shops. Every item we sell powers vital programs like hot meals and housing support for people in need of a home.
Your donation truly makes a difference.
