Despite restrictions … THE SHOW MUST GO ON! The curtain is set to go up on one of Melbourne’s most-loved charity events, albeit a little differently. Sacred Heart Mission’s 13th annual Heart of St Kilda Concert, its annual fundraiser for the Meals Program, will take place as a livestream concert on Wednesday, 2 December from its spiritual home, the Palais Theatre.
SHM will present the concert in a new format, resulting in an exciting and totally unique line up. International, interstate and local artists will perform exclusively for us this year and audiences can tune in globally, supporting those in Melbourne experiencing homelessness, social isolation and disadvantage.
Hosted by Brian Nankervis live from the Palais and streamed into the comfort of your home, the Heart of St Kilda Concert offers a stunning line-up of Australian and international musicians and comedians.
“The 13th annual Heart of St Kilda Concert in 2020 promises to be totally unique! I’ve been part of this wonderful celebration of music, comedy and the Mission’s important work in and around St Kilda from the beginning,” Brian says.
“I’m excited to say that the response to the concert this year has been exceptional – aside from featuring artists that we’ve been chasing since the first concert back in 2008 – The Living End, Missy Higgins, Jimmy Barnes – it’s brilliant to see that this year’s livestream event has attracted some of the biggest names in the business.

THE LIVING END are an Australian punk rock band, which formed in 1994. Since 2002 the line up consists of Chris Cheney (vocals, guitar), Scott Owen (double bass, vocals) and Andy Strachan (drums). The band rose to fame in 1997 after the release of their double A-sided single, “Second Solution” / “Prisoner of Society”, which peaked at No. 4 on the Australian Singles Chart and went on to sell triple platinum. They have released seven studio albums and two reached the No. 1 spot on the Australian Albums Chart: self-titled album (12 October 1998) and State of Emergency (4 February 2006). They have also gained chart success in the United States and United Kingdom. At ARIA Music Awards (Aus Grammys) ceremonies they have been nominated 27 times and have won six awards. The band have won an APRA Award (Aus version of Ivor Novello Awards) for Song of the Year in 2009. The band’s frontman, Chris Cheney is the only Australian musician to have a Gretsch guitar made specifically for him, and the company even made a limited edition for sale. Cheney’ Gretsch ‘White Noise’ model is now a sought-after collector’s item.
MISSY HIGGINS Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins has enjoyed phenomenal success with her irresistible melodies and ‘arrow through the heart’ lyrics, delivered by a striking voice that clearly means it. After touring the globe with her undeniable songs and unforgettable live performances, Missy’s highly acclaimed ‘The Sound Of White’ (ARIA Album Of The Year featuring the hits ‘Scar’, ’Ten Days’ and ’The Special Two’), ‘On A Clear Night’ (featuring North American top 20 airplay hit ‘Where I Stood’ plus Australian #1 single ‘Steer’) and ‘The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’ (featuring ‘Everyone’s Waiting’ and ‘Hello Hello’) have sold over two millions copies globally.
Missy appeared twice on the cover of Australia’s Rolling Stone magazine. She is a five-time chart topper and nine-time ARIA Award winner (Australia’s Grammys). After seven years of touring and recording, Missy quietly took a break from music for several years from 2009 to pursue other interests including a course in Indigenous Studies.
Missy began 2020 by releasing new single ‘Carry You’ written by Tim Minchin for his TV show ‘Upright’, which peaked at #5 on iTunes and was featured on the ARIA Album Chart #1 compilation ‘Music From The Home Front’. Missy capped off the year with the release of standalone single ‘When The Machine Starts’.
KEV CARMODY was born in Cairns in 1946 to an Irish-Australian father and Aboriginal mother. His maternal heritage is the Bundjalung country in New South Wales which is the Ballina/Byron Bay/Cabbage Tree Island. His indigenous grandfather was a Lama Lama man from Cape York. Carmody’s father did rural work and the family lived on a block they rented from the Government on the Western Darling Downs. Carmody did not learn to read and write until he was sent to school in Toowoomba at 10 but a world of the imagination was already alive to him, in the land and the sky, or listening to the wireless with an aerial run up a gum tree out on the stock route.
A new audience was alerted to Carmody through the 2007 album Cannot Buy My Soul, produced by Paul Kelly, with versions of his songs by artists including Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Troy Cassar-Daley and Archie Roach plus Carmody’s own performances. The album has been refreshed for this 2020 edition, produced by Sian Darling, with the original 32 tracks and six new versions of his songs.
Carmody was 22 when he wrote the words to I’ve Been Moved. Aboriginal people had only won the right to be counted in the national census through a referendum the year before, in 1967. He carried the poem around with him for years before setting it to music but in I’ve Been Moved he already had shown the strong foundation for his music: the clarity, the imagery, the truth.
BILLY BRAGG has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. Honoured with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the Ivor Novello awards in May 2018, he is regarded a valuable statesman and activist.

Earning a mention in Bob Dylan’s memoir, he is the author of three non-fiction books, the second of which, Roots, Radicals & Rockers, was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book award and fed into a BBC4 documentary about the skiffle classic Rock Island Line. His most recent book, The Three Dimensions of Freedom, argues that liberty needs to be tempered by equality and accountability.

BILLY MILLER, REBECCA BARNARD AND THE CARAVAN CHOIR. Over a decade ago, Rebecca Barnard created the Caravan Singalong Society. A handful of warblers turned into a throng, When Billy Miller joined in, adding his ‘human jukebox’ talents to Rebecca’s warmth, that handful of warblers turned into a throng. With spontaneity the key ingredient, Rebecca and Billy used their legendary singing and performing ability to create a monthly singalong night that has been sold out for several years. The Caravan Choir (with Rebecca and Billy out the front) has been a regular highlight at the Sacred Heart Concert for many years, performing with household names like Colleen Hewitt, Tim Rogers and Red Symons, to name but a few.
JEN CLOHER is a highly respected recording and performing artist and co-founder of Milk! Records (Courtney Barnett, Tiny Ruins, Hand Habits). She has released four albums, her most recent Jen Cloher (self titled) was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and debuted at number 5 on the ARIA charts. Her debut album Dead Wood Falls (2006) was nominated for an ARIA for Best Female Artist. In 2017 she was crowned Double J’s ‘Artist of the Year’ and won the AIR Award for ‘Best Independent Artist’. In 2011, Jen founded I Manage My Music a series of workshops and master classes to assist self managed artists with releasing music in Australia.
MARLON WILLIAMS New Zealand’s Marlon Williams has quite simply got one of the most extraordinary, effortlessly distinctive voices of his generation. A fact well known to fans of his first, self-titled solo album, and his captivating live shows. An otherworldly instrument with an affecting vibrato, it’s a voice that’s earned repeated comparisons to the great Roy Orbison, and even briefly had Williams, in his youth, consider a career in classical singing, before realizing his temperament was more Stratocaster than Stradivarius. But it’s the art of songwriting that has bedeviled the artist, and into which he has grown exponentially on his second album, Make Way For Love, out in February of 2018. It’s Marlon Williams like you’ve never heard him before—exploring new musical terrain and revealing himself in an unprecedented way, in the wake of a fractured relationship.
ALICE SKYE is an Australian singer and songwriter. She is a Wergaia woman from Horsham.[2] In 2017, she was the Triple J Unearthed National Indigenous Winner.[3] She released her debut album Friends With Feelings in 2018 and toured nationally with Emily Wurramara
THE MERINDAS are a contemporary R&B/Electropop duo that present a unique style of rhythmic, expressive and beautiful music dedicated to the preservation of Indigenous language and culture in a modern form. The Merindas are Candice Lorrae of Jawoyn and Thursday Islander heritage (born Darwin NT) and Nyoongar Ballardong Whadjuk woman Kristel Kickett (from Tammin WA). The group formed in Perth singing Motown hits for the premiere of The Sapphires film in 2012. They went on to sell out shows, score a 2013 Deadly Award nomination, & win the Indigenous WAM Song of the Year. They have supported Australian stars Jessica Mauboy, Dan Sultan, Mojo Juju and Grammy award-winning artist, Brandy. With a global movement in Women Empowerment and LGBTQ communities push for Equality, the duo have taken on the mission to improve self worth and love to inspire others to do the same. The Merindas are set to release an explosive new album late in 2019. The live show of this fiery duo is not to be missed!
