Donate a meal this Christmas

A meal at our Dining Hall can be the first step for a person to end their experience of homelessness, for good.

“I’ll never forget the time I realised I was homeless.”

“It was winter, it was dark and raining. I tried to sleep under a bench at a bus stop in Southbank near the casino.”

Woman looking into the distance

Isobel’s life changed dramatically, all because of a simple meal.

“One day, I was the CEO of a big company and the next, I was homeless. It happened so quickly; it still makes my head spin just thinking about it.”

For Isobel, like many other people you have supported through the Mission, one meal at our Dining Hall really turned her life around.

“I didn’t know where I was or what was happening. I was scared and hungry. Then someone told me about the Dining Hall.”

“I had never been anywhere like that before. As we got closer, I started to smell the food, and it calmed my nerves. I knew it was a safe place to be.”

For Isobel, like many others you have supported through the Mission, one meal at our Dining Hall really turned her life around.

A meal in the Dining Hall builds a relationship between a support worker and a person in need.

Once Isobel sat down in the Dining Hall, she began talking to Emily, one of our Support Workers.

“Emily came up to me to ask how I was going. I told her I’d lost everything. She said she could help me.”

Positive change for Isobel came fast: Emily secured Isobel a room in crisis accommodation and then referred her to Sacred Heart Mission’s GreenLight Supportive Housing Program.

Here, Isobel met Gabe, one of our Case Managers. They connected instantly.

Together, Isobel and Gabe found her forever home.

“Gabe wanted to know all about me. I could tell he really wanted to help, and
he never judged me. I trusted him.”

She reflected on her journey to today, starting with a meal in the Dining Hall:

“I don’t know how long I would have slept on the street, or what would have happened to me, if it hadn’t been for the Dining Hall, or for Gabe. Honestly, I feel so lucky, so grateful.”

Our donation promise

Since opening our doors in 1982, we have evolved into an independent non-profit organisation renowned for effectively helping thousands of people experiencing homelessness to rebuild their lives.

It is only through your generous support that we can continue to provide our vital services in the community.

Any donations we receive are spent on our programs and services, with the aim to alleviate and prevent homelessness, poverty and social isolation.

A small portion of our income is invested through fundraising activities. In 2020-21, for every $1 spent, $3.12 was raised.

We understand our impact is the biggest measure of success, and we continuously work towards lowering internal spending while delivering the best possible service to the most marginalised people.
