Dee's upbringing

Make a donation today

Dee* had a tough upbringing. Her mother left after experiencing repeated violence, and Dee had to care for her younger brothers and sisters. She was just 11 years old.

“I looked after everyone, got them to school, cleaned the house, did the shopping, did everything. Dad would be at work all day long, then out drinking until the pub shut. Life was really difficult with mum gone, but back then you just got on with it.”

This upbringing affected her deeply. As a result she started suffering from depression. Something you’ll agree, no child should have to go through.

Give a gift this winter to help people like Dee receive the tailored support they need to overcome past trauma, rebuild their lives and thrive.

Childhood trauma is more common than you might imagine, and can be especially devastating for young people who have no support network.

A recent Sacred Heart Mission study found nine out of 10 people who have experienced homelessness have endured trauma during their childhood. This just isn't fair.

Dee experienced homelessness as a result of early childhood trauma. At Sacred Heart Mission, we offer a range of programs and services that address the underlying causes of homelessness.
