Sacred Heart Mission undertook an organisation-wide Diversity and Inclusion Project in 2021 as a key priority for the organisation. The project developed and implemented a comprehensive Diversity and Inclusion Framework, with clear actions to be implemented to ensure that diversity and inclusion is embedded across all areas of Sacred Heart Mission.

Implementation of the project was supported by a Diversity and Inclusion Project Committee, who provides guidance, and advice as well as making key decisions regarding the project. Members represented all areas of the organisation; and supported ongoing consultation with staff for the life of the project. This project is now transitioning to a permanent committee.

Key actions of the project included:

  • Ensuring that all of our resources – for staff, volunteers, clients, residents and the general public – are inclusive. We have conducted a review of all our documents, and are working closely with staff on improving them to ensure diversity and inclusion is always considered.
  • Building our internal training offering for staff and volunteers to equip our workforce with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of our communities.
  • Expanding how we celebrate diversity across the organisation – making sure that people have the option to celebrate and share their culture and traditions.
  • Responding to staff feedback, and communicating organisational changes about diversity and inclusion to our staff.
  • Evaluating the success of our project, and looking at what else needs to be improved at the conclusion of the project.

Why is diversity and inclusion important at Sacred Heart Mission?

At Sacred Heart Mission, we have been advocates for people who are experiencing chronic disadvantage for 40 years.

We welcome people as they are, work to address their disadvantage and help people reach their true potential. We also acknowledge that marginalisation comes from structural exclusion, and we seek to address this within our own organisation.

We aim to build an inclusive organisation where diversity is valued as a key strength that supports our work.
